Many important buildings from the Medieval, Tudor and Elizabethan eras were demolished prior to the present mansion being built and enlarged by the Victorians. From 1986-1995 a campaign was successfully fought to restore this once fine Georgian mansion by a committee comprised of representatives of local conservation societies against repeated large scale aggressive development proposals for the mansion and parkland. Three of these individuals set up the Copped Hall Trust which finally saved the mansion and gardens by purchasing them in 1995. The Corporation of London had already saved the surrounding parkland in 1992. The aims of the Trust are: To protect the site permanently, and to restore Copped Hall and its gardens for educational, cultural and community benefit. If you have travelled around the M25 between junctions 26 and 27 and seen a large building up on a hill and wondered what it is, that was Copped Hall.
Our visit includes a guided tour by enthusiastic trust members of the mansion and gardens, and depending on numbers, our group may be split in to two separate tour groups. There will be access to the whole of the gardens, parts of the mansion, the cellars and the stables. There are stairs to negotiate within the mansion and the gardens are extensive and uneven, therefore sensible footwear is required.
Our visit commences at 11am and will take approximately 3 hours. Tea, coffee and home-made cakes are provided between the house and garden parts of the tour (these are included in the price) and some additional filled rolls can be made available for purchase on the day. On receipt of your booking, an information sheet will be provided which will include details of the additional food that can be purchased and information on nearby eating places for those who would like a full meal on the way home. There is adequate parking on site and if you would like further information about Copped Hall, please see their web site.
NOTE: Copped Hall and its gardens are STRICTLY PRIVATE and no other groups will be there on the day of our visit.
