The Sandys family lived at The Vyne until 1644 when it was subsequently purchased by a very successful barrister and Speaker of the House of Commons named Chaloner Chute. The Vyne then passed to his son, also named Chaloner and the estate remained in the family until 1956 when it was bequeathed to the National Trust by Sir Charles Chute. It has a fascinating history (for example, it has been a girls’ boarding school and it also provided shelter for evacuees in the second world war) and during the tour of the House, our guide will share with us many interesting stories about The Vyne.
Our visit will start when we meet at 10:30 am for tea/coffee and biscuits in the Brewhouse Tea Room. One of our members is a National Trust Guide at The Vyne who has kindly agreed to give us a brief Welcome Introduction whilst we have our coffee. Shortly afterwards we will assemble outside the House for the start of our tour which should last about an hour. After the tour, we will return to the Brewhouse Tea Room for lunch. Lunch will comprise a main course and dessert, both to be chosen by our members from the Brewhouse menu on the day of our visit. Vouchers for coffee and lunch will be sent to members prior to the day. After lunch, we will be free to explore the grounds, the book shop, gardens and gift shop, or perhaps take a lakeside or woodland walk.
You also have the option of a 45-minute guided tour of the gardens (please indicate on the booking form if you would like to join this guided tour). There is also a roof project exhibition and we may of course return to the house for further exploration.
The Vyne is situated near Basingstoke and set in 1500 acres of gardens, woodlands and wetlands. Directions will be sent to you with your vouchers. Please note – there is a flat walk from The Vyne entrance to the House of about a third of a mile so please allow time to walk from the entrance to the House. However, should members require transport, buggies should be available. There is only one main staircase in the House plus a few small steps in some areas.
