The Cinema Museum is a veritable treasure trove of cinema memorabilia, from plush velvet seats, impressive illuminated signs and elegantly tailored usher’s uniforms to movie stills, posters and cans of film. The museum is devoted to Cinemas and the experience of going to the Cinema from the early years to the mid 1950s.
The museum building is of historical significance. It opened in 1873 and was originally the Master’s House and Chapel of the Lambeth Workhouse. Charlie Chaplin was sent to the Lambeth Workhouse when he was seven years old, as a consequence of the financial difficulties of his family. In the vast, high-ceilinged main exhibition hall, a striking prototype sculpture of Chaplin, by artist and museum volunteer, Anna Odrich, takes centre stage.
The museum collection houses a plethora of Cinema-related artifacts including projectors, staff uniforms, posters, seating and more.
This visit will last aproximately two hours and will include a guided tour around the museum as well as a 30 minute film show. This show includes a variety of clips illustrating the many things that would have been seen by cinema audiences over the years.
