Diarist Samuel Pepys witnessed some of the most momentous events of the 17th Century including the restoration of the monarchy, the Great Plague and the Great Fire of London. This tour of part of the City of London is an exploration of some of the locations where Pepys lived, worked , shopped, socialised and spent time in prison!

The walk features a beautiful “secret garden”, the elegant 18th century Trinity House, a grand hotel with a garden telling the story of Pepys’ life, the Monument to the Great Fire of London, atmospheric narrow streets and a grand shopping centre.

We will also visit the church where Pepys worshipped and where he was buried (interior subject to availability). Via extracts from the famous diaries we’ll hear tales of Pepys’ reactions to the events of the day, his love of the finer things in life, his work at the Navy Office and his roving eye for the women. As a top Civil Servant Pepys met the Lord Mayor , King Charles II, Members of Parliament and distinguished Admiralty Officials and all these connections will be covered in this tour of a fascinating area.

Our expert guide, Diane Burstein, has led us on many such tours before and they have all been excellent.
